Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows TV Show

The year was 1966 and a very new soap opera of its kind appeared on national television. It was a spooky Gothic soap opera called Dark Shadows. The show caught on quickly among the pre-teens and teenagers. The showed aired at 3:30 in the afternoon when most kids were home from school.
I remember how I was introduced to the show by my grandmother who was visiting us for a couple of weeks from Long Island, NY. I remember seeing this tall ghoulish but handsome figure on the screen that caught my eye.  The mysterious man was a vampire named Barnabas Collins who wanted so much to be human.  He was in love with a woman named Josette who was unaware that he was a vampire.  Barnabas tried to keep it from her as best as he could.  Another woman named Angelique a witch who put the curse on Barnabas to become a vampire was unhappy that he was set free in his coffin. The story took place in the 18th century in a place called Collinswood.
Barnabas Collins played by actor Jonathan Frid, became somewhat of a teen idol to some of the teens and was featured in fan magazines such as; Tiger Beat, 16 Magazine and Fave.  The soap opera ended in 1971.

NEWS BRIEF: Jonathan Frid passed away on April 13, 2012 at the age of 87.   R.I.P.
